What is a Vision Model?

Learn what vision models are and how LLMs process images. Understand GPT-5 Vision, Claude 4 Vision, and Gemini 3 multimodal capabilities.

By DriftRail · Updated

Vision models are multimodal LLMs that can process both images and text. They can describe images, answer questions about visual content, extract text from documents, and analyze charts or diagrams.

Vision Model Risks

  • Hallucinating text not present in images
  • Misinterpreting charts or data
  • PII exposure in document images
  • Prompt injection via image text

Practical example

A document assistant reads a receipt image with small text and uncertain orientation.

What to check

Score field-level correctness across representative layouts, image quality, and unreadable inputs.

Limits and tradeoffs

Visual plausibility is not proof that a model read a number or interpreted a chart correctly.
