What is PII Detection in AI?

PII detection identifies potential personal information in prompts, responses, and logs. Learn where to check it and why detection is imperfect.

By DriftRail · Updated

PII detection identifies information that may relate to an identifiable person in prompts, model responses, tool results, and stored records. It supports data minimization and review; a clean detector result does not prove that a record is anonymous.

Where to check for personal information

Review user input before it reaches external systems, tool results before they enter model context, and traces before storage. A display-only mask does not remove the original value from an ingestion payload, database, export, or error log.

Patterns and contextual detection

Pattern matching can identify structured values such as some email addresses and identifier formats. Contextual models can help find names or sensitive descriptions that lack a fixed pattern. Both approaches can miss values or flag harmless text. Test on the languages and formats your application actually accepts.

Verify redaction end to end

  1. Use synthetic examples instead of real customer records for tests.
  2. Send a test identifier through input, output, tool, trace, export, and error paths.
  3. Confirm the original value is absent at the intended storage boundary.
  4. Check whether replacements preserve enough structure for debugging without preserving identity.

Example: a support ticket

A user pastes a ticket containing an email address and an order number. Replacing the email alone may leave the order number linked to a person through another system. Decide what information the task needs and whether reference identifiers should be retained, transformed, or removed.

Detection does not establish compliance

Data handling also depends on purpose, permissions, contracts, access, retention, and applicable obligations. Choose controls for the actual data flow and review missed detections. Do not send sensitive records to a monitoring service solely because it advertises a detector.
