What is AI Fallback?

Learn what AI fallback is and how to build resilient LLM applications. Understand failover strategies and monitoring requirements.

By DriftRail · Updated

AI fallback automatically switches to backup models when the primary LLM fails, times out, or returns errors. This ensures high availability for production AI applications.

Fallback Triggers

  • API errors: 5xx responses, rate limits
  • Timeouts: Slow or hung requests
  • Quality issues: Low confidence scores
  • Content filters: Blocked responses

Fallback Strategies

  • Primary → Secondary model chain
  • Circuit breaker patterns
  • Graceful degradation to cached responses
  • Human escalation for critical failures

Practical example

When the primary model times out, the application returns a bounded error or uses an evaluated alternative.

What to check

Test failures of both primary and fallback paths, preserving permissions, safety checks, and request identity.

Limits and tradeoffs

A fallback can change answer behavior, cost, and data destinations; availability alone is not sufficient.
