LLM Cost Optimization

A measurement framework for LLM cost optimization: spend by workflow, cost per successful task, quality constraints, and release comparisons.

By DriftRail · Updated

LLM cost optimization balances spend against task completion, safety, and latency. Use a repeatable measurement process so an apparent saving does not hide failed tasks, extra retries, or manual cleanup.

Choose the denominator

Raw token spend answers a billing question. Cost per accepted answer or completed workflow answers a product question. Include the model, tools, retrieval, retries, evaluation, and review work that belong to the task. Keep the denominator stable across comparisons.

Build a decision table

For each proposed change, record the baseline, expected saving mechanism, quality acceptance criteria, experiment sample, and rollback trigger. Separate changes to prompts, routing, caching, and output length so you can understand what caused the result.

Example: an inexpensive model route

A smaller candidate produces cheaper first responses but requires more retries for structured extraction. Count all attempts and rejected outputs before deciding whether the route saves money. Keep difficult document types visible as a separate cohort.

Use a practical implementation guide

Follow how to reduce LLM costs for the instrumentation and experiment sequence. Keep this page as the measurement framework and the implementation guide as the action checklist.
