AI Audit Trails

Design AI audit trails with useful event references, access controls, integrity checks, and purpose-based retention.

By DriftRail · Updated

An AI audit trail records the events needed to reconstruct a model application’s actions and review decisions. It should connect a request to the relevant model, prompt, sources, tools, and final outcome while limiting unnecessary sensitive content.

Record useful evidence

Include stable request and event identifiers, timestamps, release and prompt versions, action results, and references to the evidence used. Record who reviewed a flagged event and what decision they made. Access to a trace should follow the data and project permissions it contains.

Integrity and immutability

Hashing can help detect some changes if the verifier has a trustworthy reference. It does not by itself prevent a privileged actor from changing both a record and its hash. Distinguish tamper detection, access restrictions, retention controls, and independently protected storage when describing guarantees.

Choose retention deliberately

Set retention according to the record’s purpose and the obligations that apply to that record. Do not assume that a documentation retention period is a universal requirement for every prompt or event log. Ask the responsible reviewer to resolve deletion, preservation, and access needs for the deployment.

Verify with a real investigation

Use a synthetic request, a failed tool action, and a reviewer decision. Confirm that an authorized reviewer can reconstruct the sequence and that an unauthorized account cannot access it. Test export and deletion as well as the dashboard view.
